A Practical Local SEO Checklist For Small Businesses.

If your customers come from a particular area, local search is one of the most useful places to spend your time. Much of it comes down to keeping accurate information in the places people look.

Start with your Google Business Profile

For most local businesses, this is the first thing a customer sees. Check the basics:

  • Your business name, address and phone number are correct
  • Your opening hours are up to date, including holidays
  • Your categories describe what you actually do
  • You've added recent photos of your work or premises

Make your details match everywhere

Search for your business name and look at the directories that appear. If your address or phone number differs from one listing to the next, correct it. Mismatched details confuse customers, and they make your information look less reliable.

Say where you work, on your own site

Make it clear which areas you serve. If you cover several, a useful page for each is better than a long list of place names at the bottom of your homepage. Write something specific to each place, or it won't help anyone.

Ask for reviews, and reply to them

Asking happy customers to leave a review is simple and often overlooked. Reply to reviews too, including the unhappy ones. Future customers read those replies, and they say a lot about how you work.
